Focus and Scope

Jurnal Psikiatri Indonesia (JPI) is an open-access, general and comprehensive journal of psychiatry for psychiatrists, mental health clinicians, clinical psychologists, neurologists, primary care physicians, psychiatric nurses, academics and researchers, students of mental health, and those involved in mental health policy development.

The journal aims to bridge a knowledge gap in the application and translation of research findings into clinical practice within Indonesia to and from the rest of the world. It aims to focus on psychiatric research pertinent to Indonesia produced either within or from outside the country. This may include preclinical, clinical, digital mental health, service system, and policy development research relevant to psychiatry and will highlight the rich socio-cultural diversity of the archipelago as it pertains to mental health.

Jurnal Psikiatri Indonesia publishes peer-reviewed original research articles; review articles; commentaries on significant articles; synopses of current research highlights from Indonesia; and letters to the editor.

The scope of the journal encompasses, but is not limited to, the following fields:

  • Clinical Psychiatry: Mood disorders, schizophrenia spectrum, anxiety, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, and personality disorders.
  • Child, Adolescent, and Geriatric Psychiatry: Neurodevelopmental disorders, early-onset psychopathology, and the mental health of aging populations.
  • Biological Psychiatry and Neuroscience: Psychopharmacology, neuroimaging, genetics, and neurobiological mechanisms of mental illness.
  • Public Mental Health & Epidemiology: Mental health policy, community psychiatry, suicide prevention, and the psychological impacts of societal and environmental changes.
  • Digital Psychiatry & Telehealth: The efficacy of digital therapeutics, AI in psychiatric diagnostics, mobile health interventions, and telepsychiatry frameworks.
  • Cultural and Social Psychiatry: The intersection of culture, indigenous healing practices, and modern psychiatric care, particularly within the diverse archipelagic context of Indonesia.
  • Addiction Psychiatry: Substance use disorders, behavioral addictions (including technology and gaming), and harm reduction strategies.
  • Guidance and Counseling: Educational, career, and rehabilitation counseling, psychological guidance, marital and family counseling, and the integration of guidance services within clinical and community mental health frameworks.
  • Mental Health Nursing: Psychiatric nursing practice, therapeutic communication, patient care management, mental health promotion, crisis intervention, and the vital role of nurses within multidisciplinary mental health care teams.
  • Other Related Areas in Mental Health
    JPI also welcomes interdisciplinary studies and scholarly works that contribute to the advancement of mental health, community mental health, mental health care practice, and mental health policy, including studies conducted in clinical, community, and other settings.

All submissions to JPI undergo a rigorous peer-review process to ensure the scientific quality, originality, validity, and relevance of the published research. The journal encourages the submission of innovative and evidence-based studies that contribute to the development of effective healthcare interventions, policies, programs, and practices, as well as studies that introduce or advance new theories, methodologies, analytical techniques, measurement tools, and research approaches.

JPI welcomes contributions from healthcare professionals, researchers, academics, policymakers, practitioners, and scholars from other disciplines, provided that their work is relevant to the journal's scope and demonstrates meaningful implications for public health, community health, healthcare practice, or health policy. The journal particularly encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative research that addresses complex health challenges from diverse scientific and professional perspectives.

JPI is committed to promoting the dissemination of high-quality scientific knowledge and supporting the advancement of open and evidence-based research. Through the publication of rigorous research, innovative methodologies, systematic reviews, and evidence syntheses, the journal aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge among researchers and professionals, strengthen collaboration across disciplines, and contribute to the improvement of psychiatry, mental health, and well-being in communities at local, national, and global levels.
